My grandparents are of Finnish descent. They never taught their children (my parent) any Finnish language. My grandparents are gone now.. but one silly thing I remember about them, is when they would argue, they would argue in Finnish. Like I couldn’t understand. I always understood that they were arguing.
I wish they would have taught the words.
For my grandparents.. their language was closed and secret. They were American now. and that language was their own secret. to use to fight or to debate and argue amongst themselves. they never gave it away.
I wish they hadn’t been so secretive about it. That they had shared it with the generations. But I do understand their reasons for doing so.
I want to learn Finnish for this reason. Because its in my heritage.
