Finnish School » We’ve moved to a new server (yay!) !! - The fast, fun, and free way to learn the Finnish language online.

How does it work?

It primarily works as a vocabulary builder. Imagine taking all your flashcards and making them into a fun online game. You will be given 20-25 words in either Finnish or English. At first you can use multiple choice. Once you're comfortable with that you type in the word directly. And once you're comfortable with that you take a quiz on those words and move on to a new set of words.

How many vocabulary words are there?

Currently there are over 4,600 Finnish words. More are always being added.

Finnish School tracks your progress

The online tool keeps track of your progress and remembers which word sets you've completed. Login from any computer and continue from where you left off.

Why do I need to sign-up?

For two reasons: Finnish School needs to know who you are so it can remember which word sets you've completed. Secondly, in case you forgot your username/password, it can e-mail it to you.

I don't like giving away my e-mail address

I hate giving mine away too, but I can promise that your e-mail address and account info will NEVER EVER leave Finnish School.

Does this cost anything?

Finnish School has been free for four years now, but because of expensive server costs, I'm asking for a small 5 euro donation. The first three levels are completely free - if you find the web site useful and would like to learn more, I feel 5 euros is a small amount to ask.

Why become a Finnish School member

Finnish students who are serious about learning the language spend quite a bit of money each year on books, CDs, classes, and tutors - and I think 5 euros (the price of a beer at the pub) is a small donation to make for such a useful service like Finnish School.

With the donations I'll be motivated to develop the site further, provide users with better support, and hopefully be able to compensate for my expensive monthly server fees. Finnish School members will receive the following...

Why are you doing this?

I'm an immigrant in Finland originally from the United States. I got tired of writing words on expensive flash cards, so I wrote this program.

We’ve moved to a new server (yay!) !!

Hi Finnish School students!! We’ve moved to a new server which should be faster and more reliable! Many apologies for the downtime over the past few days, the server move too longer than I had anticipated.

Everything is back up and running now, however I’m still testing out each of the functions, so apologies in advance if you find a bug here or there, I’m working hard to squash them all!

I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments about the new server! Is it running faster? Have you found any bugs? Please send all your feedback through the comments section.

The best of luck to everyone in their Finnish language studies during 2009 !!!

It all seems to work quiet faster. Found a bug though. When i did an exam and finish it successfully the lesson is not being removed from the list but remains available. So exams can be done over and over again.

It’s not a bug, but there’s a wrong spelled word in level 17, Pidgeon should be pigeon

Hey this program is incredibly great! I totally love it!
I wish this was there for other languages (dutch for example).

Hmmm, interesting bug, probably related to the first post. I did exam 10 and then left the site and logged back in. I noticed that exam 11 was marked of instead of 10. Then i repeated the process and now exam 12 is marked off. Once more to be sure and now exam 13 is marked of instead of 10. So now exam 11, 12 and 13 are no longer available but i never completed them. All i did was exam 10, leave the site and log back in.
